Jurian “ジュリアン” is one of the heroines who also acts as a rival character for the Protagonist of Growlanser I.

(In the localized version of Growlanser II, she is known as “Julia”).

At the beginning of the story, she wears men’s clothes with a black jacket and trousers, and white shoes.

Personality

Jurian is a girl who really crave her father’s affection.

For the sake of that, she endured extremely heavy sword training.

However, because the condition for becoming an Imperial Knight was a man, she deeply regretted being born as woman.

She harbored a very big jealousy towards her younger brother because she thought that her father loved her brother more. However, after meeting Carmine and company, she came to discover the meaning of wielding a sword.

She fights using a sword and a whip, and she is a versatile avant-garde character who excels in strength. Based on the story, she uses a sword, but her whip has a better range and is easier to use.

Background

Jurian is the eldest daughter born to the prestigious Douglas family of the Burnshutain Kingdom, who has produced Imperial Knights for generations.

Her real name is Juria Douglas “ジュリア・ダグラス”, but she has been rigorously educated by calling herself Julian as a male name in order to become an Imperial Knight.

However, with the birth of her younger brother in the Douglas family, her father’s expectations shift to her younger brother, and she tries to throw away her sword in disappointment.

Growlanser I

Jurian’s first appearance was east of the Royal Capital Rosaria. She threw away her sword and asked what she was wielding for. When Carmine and party brought the sword back to her, she scolded them instead. Wallace gave advice about belief to resolve Jurian’s hesitation, after that she wanted to them to join them for a while.

Jurian had told Carmine a bit of her worries. After hearing that the reason Carmine wielded the sword was to protect the weak, Jurian became refreshed and excited saying that it was the answer she had been looking for. After they saved Sandra from the masked knights attack, Jurian became more convinced of Carmine’s answer and left the party.

Jurian participated in the fighting tournament at Grandshill and became the champion in the expert class. After that she competed in an exhibition match against Carmine’s party who was the freshman class champion.

After that, they chatted in the city and bought a Promise Pendant. Jurian made an oath to the pendant that she would become a knight, then wished to see Carmine and the party again.

After the war between Rolandia and Burnshutain began, Jurian was finally reunited with Carmine and the party. This time she appeared as a member of the Imperial Knights with the rank of general. She deeply regretted the situation of reuniting as their enemy.

On Princess Leticia’s rescue mission, Carmine and the party had their first chance to fight Jurian. Although Jurian looked a little frustrated at her failure in the mission, she also seemed impressed with Carmine and the party’s abilities.

Jurian looked tensed to see Carmine spending his holiday at Comsprings. But when Jurian fainted, Carmine helped her and found out that Jurian was a woman. But Carmine and Tipi agreed to keep this a secret. When Jurian met Carmine again at Comsprings, she asked him about her secret. Then Jurian told about the circumstances in her family that became the source of her problems.

When Zemeckis was killed, Jurian suspected Carmine and the party to be the culprit. But she looked relieved when they were proven innocent. Jurian didn’t want to trouble the village by starting a fight against Carmine’s side, so he overlooked at their actions this time.

Jurian also led the attack on the Ranzack Kingdom and ended up fighting again against Carmine’s party. She seemed to really regret many things like this war situation, her encounter with Carmine and his status as an enemy, she even cursed her fate of being born a woman.

After receiving a letter from her father who decided to side with Eliotte as the legitimate king, Jurian decided to side with Eliotte and truce with Carmine. After that, she received another letter containing an apology from his father. Then she realized the true feelings of her father and was determined to change the tradition so that women could become an Imperial Knight.

When announcing to her subordinates that she was going to rebel, Jurian did not force her subordinates to follow her, but all of her subordinates continued to believe in her and follow her.

On the day of the rebellion, she was worried about her comrade Oscar who was planning to fight against another comrade Ernest, but she chose to respect Oscar’s resolution and leave Oscar to Carmine and the party.

After the rebellion was successful, Jurian revealed that she was a woman, then Eliotte immediately understood her wish and decided to change the terms of the Imperial Knights members. At the coronation party, Jurian was present wearing a dress and Jurian’s identity was made public.

A few days later, Jurian decided to duel against Carmine. After losing to Carmine, Jurian decided to personally swear allegiance to Carmine and started calling him “My Lord”. At the Gevel subjugation celebration party, she also danced with Carmine on the veranda.

Growlanser II The sense of justice

In Growlanser II The sense of justice, she has taken over the setting where the gender was discovered.

This time she only appeared in an Imperial Knight uniform.

She appeared as an NPC and did not appear in any battles.

She was often seen in the King’s audience room and participated in giving advice or opinions when Wein and the party faced the King.

She is busy every day as the leader of the Unicorn Knights, which consists only of women.

Growlanser IV Wayfarer of the time

Jurian does not appear in main story of Growlanser IV Wayfarer of the time. However he appeared at the ending of its OVA as fan service along with several other characters from Growlanser I to III.

Growlanser ~Densetsu no Isan~

In Growlanser ~Densetsu no Isan~, Jurian appears in original Scenario 3: Burnshutain ō-to ni te (In Burnshtain Royal Capital).

This story takes place after the story of Growlanser 2. When Charlone is baking a birthday cake for Wein.

Jurian came and asked Charlone to teach her to make a cake.

Then, they made cakes together.

Chaos War

Jurian appears in another game “Chaos Wars” in chapter 5 act 1.

In this game, Jurian is given an exclusive skill that belongs only to her called “Improved Attack”.

Note: The game itself informed that “this story has no relations with any existing works” at the beginning of the game.

Drama CD

In Growlanser I Drama CD, Jurian’s serious personality and and her dream to become an Imperial Knight as seen in the main game is used to create a comedy story. However, there is also one episode where Jurian behaves differently from the one seen in the main game, and becomes an unexpected character.
