Xenos Rangler “ゼノス・ラングレー” is a wandering mercenary who wields a big sword.

(He is known as “Xenos Langley” in localized version of Growlanser II The sense of justice)

He is Karen’s older brother, and a member of the protagonist’s party. Xenos is a character that will have a different ending depending on how the players proceed the game.

Xenos is 25 years old and his height is 187 cm. He has green eyes and brown hair.

He’s wearing white armor, dark gray bottoms, and white shoes. Xenos also wears a red headband and gold plate arms.

Personality

Xenos is a kind-hearted person who loves his family.

As a result, he has a hot-blooded character and is overprotective when it comes to things related to his younger sister.

He’s the type who doesn’t think far, so he’s easily fooled and taken advantage of by bad people.

He fights with swords or axes, and he can’t use magic. Also, his movement speed is slow.

Background

After his father went missing and his stepmother died, he prioritized protecting his younger sister, Karen.

A serious secret is hidden in his birth.

In fact, he was born between Belger and Shera. And at the beginning, what Shera meant as “that child” was Xenos.

He really wanted to win a fighting tournament so that he could be drafted into the regular army to ease the cost of living for him and his sister.

Growlanser I

However, after losing to Carmine in the Freshman division final of the fighting tournament, his life has become dark. He committed a serious sin for several reasons. In fact, he was defeated in the fighting tournament because he was secretly poisoned, and Gamelan lied that “it was Carmine‘s poison.”

Karen was attacked by someone and fell into a fatal situation due to poison, and it was Gamelan who paid for the surgery, so Xenos trust him. He joined Shadow Knights and became a Gamelan’s subordinate, killing the mayor who was Growshian in Clain Village as ordered (though this scene is not shown in the main game).

After that, he became a gamelan puppet and aimed at the lives of Carmine and others. When the assassination failed, he appeared to defeat him with his own hands, telling about Carmine’s poisoning and his gratitude to Gamelan, and telling Carmine & party why he was fighting.

However, Wallace, who heard the name of Gamelan, talked about his humanity and past, and withdrew with distrust because “Gamelan is good at handling poison and Karen was also poisoned”. After that, when Xenos questioned Gamelan, he admitted and Xenos tried to leave shadow knights, but Karen was already cursed and imprisoned.

If player proceed with the story without helping Karen, she will die and Xenos will accompany Carmine to avenge his sister’s enemies. On the other hand, if the player saves Karen, Xenos will join the party to thank and atone for his previous mistakes.

He said about his missing father, “I was going to hit him when I found him,” but he seems to have no grudge after learning about the situation.

Being a real child of Belger, he has acquired the ability to interfere in space-time, and in the final battle, he used his ability with Carmine to transform people all over the world into Growshian, which helped to refine the power stone. It is optional to let him join the party in this battle, and if you do not, he will participate as NPC.

If Karen is not rescued, he will leave unknowingly after the ending, but if Karen is saved, he will win the arena and become known as the Champion. In the sequel, Karen is alive, so the latter setting is used.

Growlanser II The sense of justice

In Growlanser II The sense of justice, Xenos also appears as a playable character. Xenos is already well-known by the citizens as champion, and now is still working as mercenary. At Carmine’s request, he joined Wein‘s party, and assisted Wein in carrying out his mission.

This time he only used the sword. Even though everyone was turned into Growshian at the end of Growlanser I, Xenos ended up still unable to use magic in Growlanser II.

In this game, there will be a scene of Xenos visiting the grave of Zemekis who turns out to be Hans‘ grandfather. When Xenos tried to apologize to Hans, Hans had already forgiven him after learning of Xenos’ situation in the past from Carmine.

Growlanser III The dual darkness

In Growlanser III The dual darkness, Xenos appears as an imported character.

However, he is not involved in the main story, and only appears a playable character.

His presence or absence will not affect the main story.

Players can talk to him to listen a few words from him. But he is not voiced in this game.

Growlanser IV Wayfarer of the time

Xenos does not appear in main story of Growlanser IV Wayfarer of the time. However he appeared at the ending of its OVA as fan service along with several other characters from Growlanser I to III.

Drama CD

On the Growlanser I Drama CD, Xenos sounds like he has the same personality seen in the main game. He still loves his sister even though she doesn’t appear in the drama cd, and he already sounds on good terms with Carmine and the party.
